Tree Cut Down To Avoid Tangling With Wires

LAHORE, Pakistan – I watched a man from the Parks and Horticulture Authority cut down a tree recently.
I’m not sure how I felt about this. The tree had probably provided many uses and I wonder if the environment can really afford all this cutting of trees.
Tree cutting is common here. It’s done to keep the tree from interfering with electric wires and other cables. When the trees grow too high, the branches get tangled with the wires and are hazardous, so at least the upper, leafy branches must be cut down.
In this case, the entire tree was cut down, but it wasn’t clear why.
